What's the point of Ice Baths anyway?
Making the distinction between ice baths and cold baths is important.
And regardless, the questions should be asked “WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE DO THIS?”
Examine the benefits, of which there are many, examine the mechanics, which many people aren’t sure of, and examine the progression, which there absolutely is!
What temperature is right for me?
How long do I need to stay in?
What type of breathing protocol do I use?
…
What type of breathing protocol do I use?
OMG. What is your rhythm of breathing? Inhale for how long? Hold for how long? (do I include a hold?) Exhale for how long? Hold the exhale for how long? (do I need this too?)
Which muscles do I use? What are the mechanics of the breath?
How many rounds do I need?
How do I measure its effectiveness?
ALL goals have their own recipes.
The recipe I have put together for ice baths is for the purpose of resiliency and how you interact with stressful factors.
I took a dab of Tummo techniques (from Tibetan monks) mixed with Taoist martial arts. Throw in a bit HRV informed rhythm, some humming for Vagal nerve tone, and brought together with a splash of Buteyko method for the vasodilation and nasal breathing.
Enter Mike.
Mike was curious about my protocols for Ice Baths.
Maybe in the future I will make a video about it. Suffice it to say that he stayed in the ice bath (temp between ) - 5 degree Celsius/ 32 - 40 degrees Fahrenheit) for 34 minutes in total.
He invited me to do an instagram live with him to talk about it and answer some questions.
